Information
Languages Spoken in French Polynesia
French is the official language of French Polynesia, but many people also speak Tahitian. English is commonly spoken on the more touristy islands. However, if you venture to the less visited islands, which is highly recommended, knowing some French will be very helpful. In rural areas across all islands, you may find that only French and Tahitian dialects are spoken, with locals often mixing the two.
Currency of French Polynesia
The currency used in French Polynesia is the Franc pacifique (CFP or XPF), commonly referred to as the Pacific Franc.
Food and Drink to Try in French Polynesia
Some must-try dishes include:
- Poisson cru: Raw fish marinated in lime juice and coconut milk.
- Firi firi: Figure-of-eight doughnuts.
- Po’e: A manioc pudding made with banana, papaya, or pumpkin.
With an abundance of fresh fish, seafood, local meat, and exotic fruits and vegetables, the cuisine in French Polynesia is a highlight of any visit. French influences are evident in cooking styles, but traditional Polynesian cooking, known as ma’a a Tahiti in the Society Islands and the Tuamotus, and kaikai enana in the Marquesas, is a must-try. This involves cooking food in a large hole lined with volcanic stones heated by burning wood and coconut husks. The food is left to cook for several hours, then served buffet-style as part of an evening celebration with songs and music.
Cost of a Meal in French Polynesia
Dining out in French Polynesia can be expensive, with costs similar to those in major cities in Europe or North America. For more affordable options, look for small cafes known as ‘snacks’ that sell sandwiches and baguettes on most islands. In Pape’ete, the waterfront area is a great place to find local food served from roulottes (mobile diners) in the evenings.
Tipping in French Polynesia
Tipping is not expected in French Polynesia, although some restaurants in larger resorts may offer the option to leave a tip. Tips are appreciated but not required. Bargaining over prices is also not common, though you might be able to negotiate discounts on black pearls or arts and crafts when buying directly from an artist. It’s best to ask locally what is appropriate.

Your hotel or vacation rental host can provide information on local guides.

It’s the epitome of adventure and getting off the beaten path – a place where most visitors come accompanied by a tour guide.
Some travelers were taken aback by just how rugged the terrain was, noting the potential for danger on the valley’s trails. The overwhelming majority, however, had nothing but rave reviews for the stunning flora and fauna that decorate the area in such pristine conditions. Exploring the valley with a tour guide was highly recommended by many.
