✈️ Turbulence Ahead: U.S. Air Travel Faces Possible Chaos as Shutdown Drags On

U.S. skies could be heading toward serious turbulence next week if the government shutdown continues — and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy isn’t mincing words about it.

Duffy warned that if air traffic controllers miss another paycheck, the aviation system could experience “mass chaos,” including widespread flight delays, cancellations, and possibly even closed airspace. Controllers already missed one paycheck on October 28, and their next one is due next Tuesday.

“Many controllers can manage missing one paycheck — but not two,” Duffy said. “If we reach that point, you’ll see chaos. Flights will be delayed, canceled, and some airspace may have to close.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has already been forced to slow or stop flights temporarily when staffing levels drop too low, leading to hours-long delays at some airports. Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey saw one of the worst weekends yet, with major backups and passengers stranded for hours.

⚙️ What’s Causing the Disruptions

The shortage of controllers is hitting an already stretched system. FAA employees are still required to work without pay during the shutdown, and as financial pressure mounts, more staff are missing shifts.

Mike McCormick, a former FAA air-traffic executive and now professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, explained that when staffing drops below safe levels, the FAA sometimes shuts down portions of airspace — similar to how they divert planes during a severe thunderstorm.

That kind of rerouting causes ripple effects across the country, slowing travel even at airports nowhere near the original problem.

💸 Billions in Economic Losses

The U.S. Travel Association estimates that the ongoing shutdown has already cost the economy more than $4 billion — and the numbers could climb sharply if things don’t resolve soon.

In a letter to Congress, the association warned that continuing into the holiday season could be “economically devastating,” especially with Thanksgiving, the busiest travel period of the year, right around the corner.

“The consequences of a continued shutdown will be immediate, deeply felt by millions of travelers, and damaging to communities nationwide,” the association said.

🕑 How Bad Are the Delays So Far?

So far, most flight disruptions have been short-term and localized, similar to what happens when bad weather hits. Aviation analytics firm Cirium reports that since the shutdown began on October 1, airlines have still managed to keep roughly 80 percent of flights departing on time — the industry’s usual target.

But some airports are feeling the strain more than others. On Sunday, only about 56 percent of Newark’s flights left on schedule, and Orlando reported roughly 70 percent.

By Tuesday midday, over 1,900 delays were logged nationwide, according to FlightAware. That’s lower than average — but FAA officials acknowledged ongoing issues in Phoenix and weather-related slowdowns in Newark and LaGuardia.

📅 What Comes Next

If Congress doesn’t act soon to end the shutdown, experts expect the situation to worsen quickly. Many controllers say they’re already stretched thin, and missing another paycheck could push more of them to call out or seek other work.

Duffy and the air-traffic controllers’ union have urged staff not to stage coordinated absences — but stress and financial strain are mounting. The next week will be a major test for the system’s limits.

🧭 What Travelers Should Know

For travelers — and especially for travel advisors — the message is clear: prepare for possible disruption.

  • Expect longer lines, more delays, and potentially canceled flights if the shutdown continues.

  • Stay flexible with itineraries and allow extra time for connections.

  • Consider travel insurance or refundable tickets for added protection.

  • Keep in touch with your airline or travel agent for the latest updates before heading to the airport.

The bottom line: while the skies aren’t in total chaos yet, the turbulence is building. The longer this shutdown drags on, the more pressure mounts on air traffic control — and the greater the chance that travel plans could be grounded.

Southwest Airlines Introduces New Safety Policy for Battery Packs

Southwest Airlines is rolling out a new safety policy requiring passengers to keep portable chargers and battery packs visible when using them during a flight. This first-of-its-kind measure, set to take effect on May 28, aims to help crew members quickly respond to potential fire hazards.

Lithium-ion batteries, found in many everyday devices, pose a risk of overheating and catching fire. The FAA has recorded multiple incidents involving battery-related fires on aircraft this year, highlighting the importance of stricter regulations.

Under the new rule, passengers cannot use portable chargers while they’re inside a bag or stored in the overhead bin—instead, they must remain in plain sight. Southwest emphasized that passenger and crew safety is its top priority.

Southwest isn’t alone in tightening restrictions on power banks. Several international airlines and governments, including those in South Korea, Hong Kong, and Thailand, have recently imposed similar limitations following battery-related fire incidents.
